About the Protocol
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard created by Anthropic that defines how AI applications communicate with external data sources and tools. Think of it as the USB-C standard for artificial intelligence: a single protocol that allows any AI model to interact safely with any compatible database, web service, or developer tool.
MCP enables AI agents to read databases, inspect repositories, manage local files, interact with APIs, and automate workflows through a standardized JSON-RPC 2.0 interface. This allows developers to build once and connect across Claude Desktop, Cursor, OpenAI Codex CLI, Windsurf, Cline, and custom LLM agent runtimes.
